Glacial moving blocks or "erratic blocks"

Along the pathway you can see several boulders which invite you to wondering, bouldering and playing. The biggest ones are many meters in diameter, and are estimated to be about 65 cubic meters and weigh approximately 180 tons.

Such stones are called "erratic blocks". Strong forces were at work when the glaciers moved forward and formed the landscape during the last Ice Age. These huge stones were transported by the ice, and when the ice melted, they were left, often miles away from where they originally came. These blocks are usual traces of the Ice Age in Norway.

The blocks have entered the glaciers either by the rock below cracking up and loose stones having frozen in , or from above by stones having fallen down on the glacier.

These boulders on the road up to Prestaksla are made of gneiss, the same type of rock that we find in this area of Møre og Romsdal.
